Massimo Caine

Founder of TheScienceBreaker

Massimo's biography

Massimo, molecular biologist, is constantly on a mission to inspire scientists and laypeople around him with his passion for science. During the time spent on the bench, he followed his natural all-around curiosity, investigating several topics from medical diseases to plant physiology. Head of TheScienceBreaker, Massimo proudly chases his naïve dream of an engaged society where scientists and citizens are facing together the upcoming challenges for human civilizations. At the University of Geneva, Switzerland, Massimo works for BiOutils – an academic and laboratory-based platform for outreach in life sciences.

Scientific Editors

Carlos Javier Rivera-Rivera

PhD student, University of Geneva

Carlos Javier's biography

Carlos has been in love with Nature ever since he can remember. He spent many days camping, snorkeling and otherwise exploring the tropical forests and seas of his native Puerto Rico. Adding passion to his love affair, he is now studying molecular phylogenetics, trying to uncover the intricate evolutionary processes that have shaped our DNA sequences. Knowing that communication is essential for any good romance, Carlos believes that the best way to communicate his love for Nature is by making the amazing world of research accessible to all.

Margot Riggi

PhD student, University of Geneva

Margot's biography

Margot is a dynamic and creative jack-of-all-trades. She chose to study Biology (she is currently doing a PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Geneva), however, focusing on doing one single thing has always been difficult for her. Therefore, her activity within TheScienceBreaker as Scientific Editor enables her to broaden her playing field, while keeping herself informed about discoveries outside of her domain of expertise. Being her mission, Margot firmly believes in the importance of direct communication between scientists and laypeople.

Anatoly Kozlov

PhD student, University of Geneva

Anatoly's biography

Anatoly throughout his studies touched a number of different sciences – like physics, biology, philosophy. This made him think that each community has it's own language. Even within the science different fields not always understand each other well – not to mention outsiders. However wonder is universal for all people. He believes that beauty of new discoveries could inspire everyone, no matter what person does in life. But knowledge has to be accessible. That's why Anatoly wants to take a challenge of bringing complex concepts of modern science into the light of clarity.

Reinier Prosee

PhD student, University of Geneva

Reinier's biography

Like the other members of TheScienceBreaker, Reinier has a wide range of personal and scientific interests. Between obtaining his master’s degree in Neuroscience (University of Oxford) and starting a PhD in Molecular Biology (University of Geneva), Reinier worked for a medical publishing company in London. This experience increased his awareness of the communication gap between scientists and the broader public. Being part of TheScienceBreaker, Reinier aims to help bridge this gap by opening up the scientific processes behind new developments so that it can be discussed in a free, open and more inclusive way.

Beata Kusmider

PhD student, University of Geneva

Beata's biography

Engineer of biotechnology by training and a PhD candidate in molecular biology, Beata believes that science not only needs public understanding, but also engagement. At the same time, she realizes that science advances quickly. So fast, that it is hard for the information to be transmitted to and assimilated by the broader public. Consequently, Beata wants to participate in dissemination of new discoveries and creation of a forum, where groups with different points of view meet and every perspective can be heard and addressed.

Laura Lorenzo-Orts

PhD student, University of Geneva

Laura's biography

As a kid, Laura loved to read any book she could reach. Soon she developed a passion for literature and philosophy. An interest about “life” began to emerge in her and she decided to study it from a scientific point of view. Now, she is doing a PhD in plant biology, where she participates actively in the process of understanding life. The more she learns about biology, the more she thinks life is extraordinary. Being aware that scientific discoveries are not within the reach of the general public, she is willing to share her pleasure of writing to make science available to everybody.

Giacomo Rossetti

PhD student, University of Geneva

Giacomo's biography

Giacomo is a budding molecular biologist who has developed his interest for Science during… his classical studies! The study of literature, art, greek and latin culture made him trust in the beauty of truth and he is convinced that Science has the most powerful means to seek it. But he thinks that this is not enough: it is essential to communicate Science and true information properly and make it accessible to everyone, giving everybody the possibility to be engaged in a meaningful debate. Giacomo joined TheScienceBreaker fascinated by the perspective of dealing with the work of other colleagues as well as of being regularly updated with scientific discoveries. His motto: “Science for knowledge”.

Comm Officer

Aurélia Weber

BiOutils, University of Geneva

Aurélia's biography

For a long time Aurélia thought that science was a mysterious and unreachable world, reserved for geniuses. As a consequence, she begun her studies in literature until something unexpected came along. Her curiosity took over and she decided to study Biology, obtaining (much to her surprise) a Master degree in Microbiology! Having realized that science is a world that can be discovered by anyone, she is now transmitting her scientific passion to students through her Communication Officer job at BiOutils.
